The 2021 Census counted 816,340 occupied private dwellings in Montréal. Nearly 57% were apartments in buildings under five storeys, 16% were in buildings of five storeys or more, and 13% were apartments in duplexes. In addition, 36% of occupied dwellings were in buildings constructed in 1960 or earlier.

A public health report published in 2015 shows that between 2010 and 2014, bed bug reports were higher in Ville-Marie, Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension. Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Saint-Laurent stood out for cockroaches. That is a historical picture. In 2025, municipal bed bug treatment declarations included dwellings in 67 reference neighbourhoods across 17 boroughs. Recent records were therefore not limited to the areas that stood out ten years earlier. Montréal public health's 2022 survey also confirms that building type matters: among renters, cockroaches were reported in 3.6% of buildings with 1 to 5 units and 18.4% of buildings with 12 or more units.
