A noise in the attic does not reveal on its own whether a squirrel, raccoon or another animal is present. Timing, entry location, damage, tracks and nesting material help distinguish an animal passing through from one sheltering or raising young inside the structure.

Common urban wildlife
Montréal's urban wildlife includes squirrels, groundhogs, skunks, raccoons and pigeons. Observe from a distance and note the location and time of activity; do not approach or handle the animal.
Raccoons may investigate roofs, chimneys, sheds, decks and unsecured waste. Heavier movement above a ceiling, displaced materials near a roof opening or repeated nighttime visits can justify a closer assessment.
Squirrels are active during the day and can use small gaps around a roofline, soffit or vent. Repeated travel to one opening matters more than a squirrel simply crossing the yard.
Groundhogs dig burrows and may shelter beneath decks, sheds or other low structures. A large opening with freshly moved soil and a worn route through the yard can indicate an active den rather than a brief visit.
Skunks may shelter beneath decks, porches or sheds and forage in lawns. Odour alone does not prove that an animal is denning on the property, so the activity and possible access should be assessed before anything is closed.
Pigeons can repeatedly roost or nest on ledges, balconies and sheltered parts of a roofline. Droppings and nesting material show where activity is concentrated, but any bird or nest must be assessed under the rules that apply before it is disturbed.
You do not need to identify the species before calling. A short recording, photo taken from a safe position and notes about timing can help Alexandre decide whether an on-site inspection is needed.
Access, shelter and food
Urban wildlife uses properties for shelter, food and safe nesting or denning sites. A roof gap, uncapped opening, space under a deck or quiet ledge can become more attractive when garbage, pet food, bird seed or garden produce is also available nearby.
The visible opening should not be sealed until the area is confirmed vacant. Québec advises making sure no animal remains inside before closing an attic or chimney access because an animal trying to escape can cause further damage.
A lawful, case-specific response
The appropriate response depends on the species, exact location, possible young, building access and applicable wildlife rules. Alexandre confirms the proposed work and price after the situation has been assessed.
Alexandre asks where and when the animal or noise appears, what damage is visible and whether there may have been contact with a person or pet. Photos or a short recording can help when they can be taken without approaching the animal.
The assessment looks for the likely species, active routes, den or nesting areas, food sources and signs that dependent young may be present. A visit is scheduled when an on-site inspection is needed.
Removal, exclusion, capture or another response is chosen according to the circumstances and the rules that apply. When capture is appropriate, Alexandre uses a professional cage suited to the animal, its location and the building conditions.
Before work begins, Alexandre explains the recommended scope and price, including any case-specific handling, monitoring or preventive step that is included. Relocation, repairs, cleanup and a fixed number of visits should not be assumed unless they are confirmed for the job.
Once the occupied area is confirmed vacant, access points and attractants can be addressed as appropriate. The need for exclusion work, repair or follow-up is determined case by case.
Before the inspection
Do not feed, corner, touch or attempt to capture a wild animal. Keep children and pets away, and avoid reaching into a chimney, soffit, burrow or sheltered space where the animal or young could be hidden.
Do not block the opening while activity continues. Note the time and location of sightings, and tell Alexandre if you have seen an adult repeatedly carrying food or entering the same place.
Young animals and nests
Young animals may remain hidden even when the adult is away. Sealing too early can separate them or trap an animal inside, so the presence and stage of any young must be considered when planning the response.
Bird work also depends on the species and whether a nest is active. Federal rules protect migratory birds and nests containing a live bird or viable egg, with additional year-round protection for certain species. Do not remove or disturb an occupied nest yourself.
After the animal leaves
Secure garbage and compost, bring pet food indoors, clean spilled bird seed and collect ripe garden produce. These measures make the property less attractive without forcing an animal into another part of the building.

Québec strongly discourages—and in some circumstances prohibits—moving wildlife away from where it was captured.

Do not seal the access or separate the adult from the area. Tell Alexandre about repeated adult activity, calls or nesting material. The presence and stage of dependent young affect the timing and method, and the response must be planned before the opening is closed.
Not while it may still be active. Québec recommends confirming that no animal remains inside before closing attic or chimney openings. A trapped animal may damage the building while trying to escape. Mark or photograph the opening from a safe place and wait for the assessment.
Alexandre can assess recurring pigeon activity and the part of the building being used. What can be done depends on the bird, nest status, access and applicable rules. An active nest or protected species cannot simply be disturbed or removed; the allowed scope must be confirmed first.
Move away from the animal. Québec advises washing even a minor wound with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes and contacting Info-Santé 811 promptly. If a pet was exposed, contact a veterinarian. Report a suspicious raccoon, skunk or fox through Québec's wildlife guidance.
