Recognize the evidence
A clear photo or safely contained specimen can help with identification. Health Canada describes the German cockroach, a common indoor species, as tan to light brown with two dark parallel streaks behind its head. Evidence left in sheltered areas then helps determine where to investigate.
Look without emptying the home or spreading pesticide. Signs often collect in dark, warm or damp areas that provide quick access to food and water.
A brown insect found near a window, drain or box is not automatically a German cockroach. Size, markings, location and nearby evidence help avoid treating the wrong insect or overlooking a broader issue in the building.
Food, water and shelter
Health Canada explains that cockroaches live wherever food, water and shelter are available. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements and plumbing areas often provide warmth, moisture and tight hiding places. A sighting on a counter may therefore lead the inspection toward a cupboard, appliance, pipe or nearby opening.
Cockroaches and egg cases can also arrive in shipping boxes, food items, empty containers, second-hand furniture or appliances. In an apartment building, openings around pipes, ducts and other shared services may allow movement between areas. That possibility should be reported to the owner or manager rather than assumed from one unit alone.
A case-specific intervention

Reduce favourable conditions
Clean accessible crumbs, residue and grease, keep food in sealed containers and remove garbage regularly. Do not leave dirty dishes, standing water or pet food available overnight.
Report leaks and condensation, and reduce cardboard and clutter near active areas. These measures support control, but they do not prove that a home was dirty and do not replace an assessment when cockroach activity continues.
Tenants and buildings
Montreal public-health guidance tells tenants to notify the owner immediately when cockroaches are found. Keep photos, dates and copies of your messages so the situation and its progression can be documented clearly.
Cockroaches can move between parts of a building. This does not mean Alexandre automatically treats the entire property; access, coordination and scope must be decided with the owner or manager according to the available evidence.

One sighting cannot establish the size of the problem. Cockroaches are mainly active at night and may remain hidden, so location, frequency and other evidence matter. Photograph the insect, note where it disappeared and request an assessment instead of assuming either that it was alone or that the home is heavily infested.
Look for live or dead insects, small dark spotting, shed skins and egg cases in sheltered areas. Common places include cupboards, the space beneath a sink, behind appliances and openings near plumbing. Do not dismantle an appliance or carry potentially affected items through the home simply to search for more evidence.
